Great Lakes Institute of Management hosts Narayana Murthy as part of its ‘Distinguished Thought Leadership Series’

Bengaluru, 19th Feb 2021 : Padma Vibhushan Mr. Narayana Murthy, Founder, Infosys graced Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai in a virtual fire-chat session organized by the institute. Mr. Murthy addressed a strong audience of 750+ participants and shared his insights based on the experience and observations over the years.

During the session, Mr. Narayana Murthy touched upon some key topics. He started off with his definition of an entrepreneur and explained that entrepreneurs come with bright and powerful ideas.  His latest venture is all about unleashing the power of young Indian minds. He highlighted few qualities than an individual should possess to become an entrepreneur. Some of these qualities include competency, leadership, learnability and a sound value system. He further elaborated and said that an entrepreneur should transform the power of ideas into job and wealth creation. He then touched upon the topic of whether the Indian I.T companies have moved up in the value chain system? He said that, Indian companies have been doing work that is of high value for their customers and are now focusing on higher per capita productivity. But the sector still remains as reactive problem solvers which needs to change and a more proactive approach is the need of the hour.

He then spoke about the role of using luck to one’s advantage. Hard work plays a key role in shaping your career. He said, ‘’Chance favours the prepared mind’’. When you fail as an individual, it is important to introspect your failure, analyse, decide on the next step and then act accordingly. He then spoke about how entrepreneurs can handle multiple roles in their initial stages of entrepreneurship. He was quick to add that his philosophy of choosing a team is to pick bright youngsters, review constantly and give them an opportunity to grow. He also emphasized on developing checklists and have constant dialogue with the team which can help and improve upon what you are doing at that point of time. High learnability, discipline and hard work are keys to enhance productivity. Mr Murthy also said that, he personally prefers learnability over experience for skills.

He next addressed the concern wherein I.T. sector pays higher remunerations than some other sectors and we are losing great talent in the sectors. He addressed the companies from different sectors and said, they need to sit down and ensure that the workplace provides a learning experience. Companies should visit campuses and sell jobs to students and provide better compensation. He added that, students nowadays prefer careers where there is learning involved. Also, curriculum in colleges need to keep pace with the industry demand and in-company training programs should be a key area of investment for the companies to groom talent. He then stressed upon the New Education Policy and rued the lack of constant research and innovation in Indian educational institutions. He mentioned that the New Education Policy (NEP) is certainly going to improve the quality of education. He called for a change in the mind-set of the society and said that the focus should be upon instilling curiosity, problem solving, open-mindedness, respect other’s opinions and not afraid of learning among the youngsters. He said that there is a need to embrace these traits in our cultures and then change will follow.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Suresh Ramanathan, Dean, Great Lakes Institute of Management, said “We are honoured to have the magnanimous presence of Mr. Narayana Murthy. His wisdom, knowledge, experience and vision is unparalleled and today’s event was a chance for our students to pick on his thoughts and learn from the man himself. His idea of originality, problem-solving, creativity, importance of values and sense of balance can truly go a long way in shaping our society and empower the youth of tomorrow. I also want to thank our esteemed audience who were part of this momentous occasion and we will continue to invite leaders who can be a source of inspiration for our students and other generations.”

Bengaluru, 17th Feb 2021 : HCL Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of HCL Technologies Ltd announced the winners of the sixth round of the HCL Grant, a flagship program dedicated to strengthening India’s “fifth estate” of NGOs working towards nation building.

The three NGOs, one each in the development areas of environment, health, and education, will each receive a grant of INR 5 crore ($685,000) for a three to five-year project. In addition, two finalists in each category will receive a one-year grant of INR 25 lakhs ($34,000), making a total grant of INR 16.5 crore.

HCL Foundation, which this year celebrates a decade of building strong and robust communities, is committed to contributing to the nation’s growth curve. Under its HCL Grant program, the Foundation has so far committed a more than INR 60 crore ($8.26 Million), excluding this year’s grants. Recognized as one of the most sought-after validations amongst NGO ecosystems in India, the HCL Grant has in the past five years reached over 733,000 beneficiaries. The Grant aims to touch the lives of at least 1.72 million people in 8,598 villages in 70 districts across 18 states and two union territories of India .

The winning NGOs of HCL Grant 2021 were:

  • Sahas (Environment)
  • India Health Action Trust (Health)
  • Child Rights and You (Education)

The NGOs were chosen after an 8-month review of thousands of applications by an eminent jury, monitored and audited by Grant Thornton, the governance partner of HCL Grant. The jury consisted of: Ms. Robin Abrams, Director, HCL Technologies, and Chairperson of the jury; Mr. Suresh Narayanan, Chairman and Managing Director, Nestle India Limited; Mr. B. S. Baswan, former Director, Indian Institute of Public Administration, and former Secretary, Human Resource Development ministry; Ms. Pallavi Shroff, Managing Partner,  Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. law firm; Dr. Richard Lariviere, President Emeritus, Field Museum (Chicago), and former President, University of Oregon; and Mr. Shiv Nadar, Founder of HCL, Chief Strategy Officer of HCL Technologies, and Founder and Chairman of the Shiv Nadar Foundation.

“The past year was a unique year of resilience and transformation that taught us how to transcend barriers and keep going even in the face of adversity,” said Ms. Abrams. “Despite the pandemic, the robustness demonstrated by our NGO partners, experts, jury members and the entire team is commendable. The passion and zeal of our NGO partners to bring in scalable and replicable solutions have created systemic shifts across geographies, lending velocity to the sustainable development agenda. The winners and finalists of this year’s Grant also have significant stories to tell, with visible on-the-ground impact. My best wishes to these NGOs, who are addressing some of the most pressing issues in the key development categories of environment, health, and education in the most remote corners of the country.”

Ms. Nidhi Pundhir, Director, HCL Foundation, said: “The year 2020 has been both special and unusual. Special, in that the Foundation is completing ten years of facilitating high-impact, sustainable socio-economic development in rural India. Unusual, in that the NGOs we support had to deal with unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic and various natural disasters, while initiating and implementing their developmental projects. What is inspiring about these NGOs is that they are treating COVID-19 as the ‘new normal’ and are continuing with their path-breaking projects without a pause, creating a much-needed last-mile support framework.”

On the occasion of the grant awards, the HCL Foundation released “Fifth Estate – NGOs Transforming Rural India in Environment, Health and Education,” a compendium featuring the top 30 NGOs selected in the sub-jury round, as well as the previous year’s winning NGOs.

Under Daaji’s spiritual leadership, Shri Ram Chandra Mission is inspiring the whole world – says Prime Minister Mr. Narender Modi

Bengaluru, 17th Feb 2021 : Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi in his valedictory address to the practitioners of Sahaj Marg (Heartfulness meditation), congratulated them on the completion of 75 years of Shri Ram Chandra Mission and emphasised the need of embracing yoga and meditation to combat the uncertainties in life. Mr. Kamlesh Patel (Daaji) President of Shri Ram Chandra Mission & Guide of Heartfulness, along with lakhs of Abhyasis (practitioners of Heartfulness) and new seekers were part of the virtual valedictory ceremony. Heartfulness under the aegis of Shri Ram Chandra Mission (also known as Sahaj Marg) has been propagating the modern-day version of the ancient Raja yoga system of meditation amongst millions of people across 150 countries worldwide. People across the world are benefiting from integrating this easily adopted practise in their daily lives.

Prime Minister Mr. Modi also lauded the efforts of Heartfulness Guide, Mr. Kamlesh D Patel (Daaji), and mentioned - In today’s world, there is lot of emphasis on fast pace, people are short on time. In such times, through Sahaj Marg, you (Shri Ram Chandra Mission) are making a significant contribution in keeping people energetic and healthy. 1000’s of your volunteers and trainers are familiarising the world with the art of Yoga and Meditation. This is a huge service to humanity/mankind. Your trainers and volunteers have made the real meaning of knowledge come true. Our Dear Kamlesh ji is famous in the world of meditation and spirituality as Daaji. I can only say that he is a beautiful amalgamation of goodness of the Western World and India. Under Daaji’s spiritual leadership, Shri Ram Chandra Mission is inspiring the whole world and especially the youth towards a healthy body and a healthy mind.

Addressing the gathering Mr. Kamlesh Patel (Daaji), Guide of Heartfulness said, “The transformational benefit of Heartfulness Meditation lies in transmission of Pranahuti (life force), unique to our practise and helps make it easier for the seeker in making meditation a daily part of their lives and benefit from it.  Heartfulness Institute stands out by making relentless efforts to share the learnings from this ancient tradition, free of charge, to people across the world.  The Heartfulness practice is a certain way of achieving peace, leading to samadhi. It is known to offer a state of deep meditation and bliss within the first few weeks of practice.”

Prime Minister in his opening remarks congratulated the mission and inspired the practitioners of Heartfulness by mentioning - this milestone of 75 years is very critical in nation building and taking the society forward strongly. It is the result of your commitment towards this goal that this mission is today spread to more than 150 countries.

In reference to the global headquarters of Heartfulness in Hyderabad he said, I have been told that Kanha Shantivanam is built over a region that was barren earlier. It is your (Daaji) dedication and commitment that has transformed it into Green Kanha Shantivanam.

He continued his address and said - the world is looking at health and wellness very seriously especially after Covid 19. India has much to offer in this regard. Our Yoga and Ayurveda can contribute to a healthy planet. We should scientifically elaborate on their benefits and invite the world to come and rejuvenate in India. Your own Heartfulness meditation practice is a step in that direction.

Globally, lack of attention to Mental health issues have only compounded the situation with COVID 19. Studies by reputed organisations have also shown that Heartfulness meditation and other forms of meditation help reduce stress, anxiety and promote overall wellbeing. Meditation and yoga will play a very important role in averting a new crisis in the making, and we must embrace these practices to lead a more balanced and harmonious life.

Added Daaji, “It is through karma that we move towards Brahma vidya. It is through Shramma that we proliferate in the material world. Both are necessary. It is a clarion call that India must lead the world and rest of humanity towards spirituality. Spirituality is unification, and we must unite by achieving the highest goal through interconnectedness amongst ourselves without any barriers.”
